The Umbria Region is promoting the event named "The Umbria Textile route: laboratories open to the public in Pintoricchio’s homeland”, which covers Spello, Perugia, Città di Castello, Spoleto, Orvieto, Corciano, Deruta and Valtopina from 1 to 4 May. Four days to discover the towns renown for their lace, embroidery and textiles along a route that crosses Pintoricchio’s home land, on the occasion of the celebrations for the 550th anniversary of the birth of this great Umbria artist.
“The objective – explains Mario Giovannetti, the Umbria Economic Development Councillor – is to develop a new form of tourism, along the lines of tourism linked to art, wine and cuisine, but focused on artistic handicraft in the textile sector that, given its unique features, is among those that deserve to be protected and enhanced".
In order to increase visitors’ interest in the various production phases, there will be demonstrations as well as weaving courses and hands-on lessons along side thematic conferences and workshops. In particular, in Spello, there will be an exhibition of the current traditional Umbria lace, embroidery and textile production and in every town along the “Textile route” there will be tour itineraries advertised, which include production laboratories, museums and textile collections.
“The intention – points out Giovannetti, the regional Councillor – is to offer an interesting opportunity to compare the current textile production with that which Pintoricchio describes so well in his image-based works that reveal his special interest in and deep curiosity for the world of the so-called ‘minor arts’. The route that covers eight Umbria towns – he concludes – wants to shed light not only on the beauty and the unique features of these products, but also on the fact that quality artistic handicraft products are highly representative of the area, its history, its culture and its economy".
