A quality wine, that is also safer, certified and that offers reliable production chain traceability, from the vineyard to the table. As of 9 April, thanks to the consent of the Ministry for Agricultural Policies, the Montefalco Consorzio di Tutela Vini will introducea guarantee band for Montefalco Cdo bottles, for the very first time. The new band is similar to the one already on Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin bottles (for example Sagrantino di Montefalco Cgdo), and it has been created to offer consumers further guarantees on the geographic origin of a major Umbria wine, the Montefalco Cdo. “The project falls within the strict checks that the Consorzio carries out in the cellars of the area to verify the origin of the lots of wine as well as the respect of production and grape blend rules – underlined the president Lodovico Mattoni -, We decided to introduce the band because we want to offer consumers guarantees as to the quality and the provenance of our wine that is rigorously checked during all stages of production. The project was undertaken some months ago and it reached its conclusion just now, at a difficult moment for Italian enology”. Montefalco Cdo (sangiovese base, plus 10-15% sagrantino and other non-aromatic grapes) is the number 2 wine in the area. It covers 430 hectares of vineyards ( as against 660 for Sagrantino) and almost 2.2 million bottles for the 2006 harvest, against 1.7 million bottles of 2004 Sagrantino di Montefalco Cgdo, the last on the market. Just as Sagrantino, Montefalco Cdo has grown considerably in recent years: in 2000, there were only 157 hectares and 1 million bottles on the market. During the Vinitaly that has just come to an end, during the “Journey in the Sagrantino”, operators welcomed the presentation of the event organised by the Consortium for the promotion of local products, covering an area that lies between the five Perugia municipalities of Bevagna, Castel Ritaldi, Giano dell'Umbria, Gualdo Cattaneo e Montefalco.
Now that Vinitaly is over, all producer efforts are focused on success for the first Sagrantino Day International planned to take place on the dame day, 21 April, in over thirty cities, seven of which are abroad: Berlin, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Luxemburg, Monaco and Tokyo.
From Italy to Japan, from Germany to the UK, over 3,000 sommeliers will taste six Sagrantino di Montefalco Cgdo wines and this Umbria jewel will be subjected to an organoleptic perception test. The event is organised with the collaboration of Ais and the World Wide Sommelier Association.
The complete list of the addresses of the thirty tastings on
21 April can be found on the website:
