 In Umbria and in Italy as a whole, February 9th will be National Medicine Collection Day, it is being organised for the eighth consecutive time and sees the Umbria pharmacies taking part in this important solidarity venture that makes it possible to supply free medicines to persons in need.
This venture, promoted by the Banco Farmaceutico Onlus Association with the Compagnia delle Opere – Impresa sociale and, for our region, the Umbria Federfarma pharmacists (regional Trade Union of Umbria pharmacy owners) was presented this morning during a press conference in Perugia.
«The activities of the Banco Farmaceutico – declared Ilio Liberati, Perugia City Councillor for Economic Development – is an important example of subsidiarity whose greatest value is the human relations that it creates between the various persons involved thus generating a chain of social solidarity made up of pharmacists and volunteers busy collecting and distributing, citizens purchasing, the bodies that receive the collected medicines and the needy to whom they are then given».
«There are 44 pharmacies (29 in the province of Perugia and 15 in that of Terni) that have accepted to take part in this venture – says Franca Proietti Cicoria, who is in charge of the regional branch of Banco Farmaceutico and also recalled that last year four thousand medicines were collected. Volunteers will be in the pharmacies to explain to citizens how the collection works, and the pharmacists themselves will advise as to which over-the-counter medicines are most needed».
Massimo Ortalli, Secretary of the Umbria Federfarma, stressed the role of the pharmacies that are taking part in the venture by helping with the choice of medicines, paying an association fee and "adopting" the body to whom the collected medicines are taken.
«This year too, the constant daily commitment of Umbria pharmacies towards consumers as a whole, but especially towards people who need assistance, extends its field of action thanks to their participation in ventures of concrete solidarity such as this one of the Banco Farmaceutico – said Augusto Luciani, Vice-president of Umbria Federfarma – It is not by chance that as compared to 2007, the number of Umbria Federfarma pharmacies taking part in the project has increased by more than 20%, from 36 last year to 44 in 2008. Umbria pharmacy owners, who are the perfect observers of social-health dynamics in the area and offer their professionalism every day, know all to well how important it is to be able to make available to the needy medicines that are wrongly considered “banal”. There are situations in which a ‘simple’ aspirin may be absolutely indispensable. This is why Federfarma is taking part with enthusiasm in the Banco Farmaceutico project again this year.
In thanking all those who are taking part, Valter Venturi underscored the symbolic value of the venture «that does not pretend to solve the problems of poverty that exist in this country but does want to be a tangible sign of what each of us can do individually».
The collection is organised as follows: on collection day the Banco Farmaceutico volunteer present in the pharmacy shall make clients aware and inform them of the venture. The client-donor shall purchase the medicine. The pharmacist shall fill out a slip with details of the donated medicine and give the donor a receipt. The donor shall place the medicine in the Banco Farmaceutico container in the pharmacy. Following collection day, the pharmacist shall hand over the slips relating to the collected medicines to the Banco Farmaceutico. The Banco Farmaceutico shall distribute the slips to the approved bodies according to their needs. The bodies, for their part, shall distribute the slips to the persons they assist. Then the needy person can go to the pharmacy and present the slip to receive the medicine he/she requires. This venture makes it possible to help over one thousand people in need in our region through a number of approved bodies.
The medicines that are collected are: for fevers, for colds, pain killers, anti-flu, for the stomach, laxatives, eye drops, milk enzymes and disinfectants.
In 2007,the Perugia Banco Farmaceutico helped 8 approved Bodies to help 400 people and distributed 2500 medicines and health products.
National Medicine Collection Day is organised under the patronage of the President of the Republic. Banco Farmaceutico is an non-profit-making association, created in the year 2000 thanks to a combination of the professionalism of Federfarma and Compagnia delle Opere's experience in the social sector. The aim of Banco Farmaceutico is to help persons in need by meeting their need for medicines by collaborating with assistance bodies that already operate locally, in order to educate man to sharing and to gratuity.
