An exceptional event at L'Officina with the presence of Mikhail Koulakov, an artist who is Moscow-born but Umbrian by adoption and is one of the most representative members of the Russian post-war avant-guard. He was untouched by the concept and the practice of socialist realism because he was close to abstractionism and expressionism, in the Sixties he only held exhibitions in scientific institutes that thanks to their privileged position had a little more freedom, and in private homes, a sort of “Apartment art”. Those were therefore his artistic underground years devoid of any relationship at all with the public.
Immediately after his arrival in Italy, in 1976, he took part in the 1977 Biennale of Venice within the New Soviet art: an unofficial perspective, which is know to the public as the very famous “Biennial of dissidence”, curated by Enrico Crispolti. Only with the Perestroika were his merits recognized in his country of origin, and he was invited to take part in important exhibitions in public museums such as the State Museum of Fine Arts A.S. Puskin and private galleries.
He has now chosen Italy as his home country, and Umbria as the place to live and work, and he has thus offered our region important shows, the most recent of which was held at the Rocca Paolina in Perugia, in 2003. It is because of his strong ties with our region and in particular with Perugia where he taught the art of T'ai Chi Chuan for years that the artist accepted to hold a small exhibition dedicated to the stars and the universe, which are recurring themes in his research into thinking of sidereal space, the endless meanders of the spirit and unworldliness as absolute places, from 12 February to 2 April 2008, during the opening times of the restaurant.
It is within the “Osmosi Dei Sensi” project that the Circolo Culturale L’Officina, will present his works to those in the area who don't yet know him, and invites the public to the opening night when a supper will be dedicated to the artist, with dishes inspired by the Russian tradition along side dishes belonging to the typical tradition of Umbria that he has loved so for almost thirty years.
