Bread and Oil at the Press 2007


On Sunday 25 November come to the green oil kermess, in 120 Italian cities, 8 of which are in Umbria: Bevagna, Collazzone, Giano dell’Umbria, Massa Martana, Stroncone, Torgiano and Magione


Discover Umbria’s “green gold” on 25 November 2007 with “Pane e Olio in Frantoio”, the traditional event organised by the Associazione Nazionale Città dell’Olio under the patronage of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry that is celebrating its sixth birthday this year and can count on the participation of eight Umbria cities to celebrate their novello extra-virgin oil and the typical local bread.

The complete programme of regional appointments was presented this week at the Sala Fiume in Palazzo Donini in Perugia during the press conference that opened the event with the participation of Paolo Morbidoni, Vice-President of the Città dell’Olio, di Giano, the Mayor and Carlo Liviantoni, Regional Agriculture Councillor.

There will be 120 extra-virgin olive oil “capitals” throughout Italy where the main piazzas will come alive with the green colour of olive oil and the aroma of freshly baked bread.

In Bevagna, on Sunday, it will be possible to taste all the local Umbria and Bevagna traditional breads, prepared and baked in the oven set up in the piazza along with the Umbria, the Colli Martani, Moraiolo, organic and multicultivar Pdo extra-virgin oil and snails. The “acqua Mia” exhibition and the local presses will also be open to the public.

In the hamlet of Casata in Collazone, starting at 10:00 am, it will be possible to visit the photographic exhibition on public ovens and, deep in the olive groves, it will also be possible to taste local breads and oil.

In Giano dell’Umbria, the “Le vie dell’Olio” event will start on Friday 23 November: at 8:00 pm, at the former Molino Sacchi press, the “Bruschetteria del Fachiro laureato” will open and it will be possible to go to the presentation of Umberto Raponi’s book after which the bruschetta restaurant is named.
Exceptionally this year, Franco Marini, President of the Senate will be present and on 24 November, he will address the Congress “I talenti nel cuore dell’Umbria (talents in the heart of Umbria): the new agriculture, its products and territories of excellence” in the Sala Fra Giordano and then around 12:00am, he will take part in the official inauguration of the XII edition of the event to the cheerful sound of the Giano Musical Band.
At 3:00 pm, there will be Oleo/vagando tra olivi millenari, abbazie benedettine e frantoi aperti… tour through thousand-year-old olive groves, Benedictine abbeys and open presses with a free shuttle from P.za S. Francesco. All participants will receive a free copy of “I PIACERI DELL'ENERGIA 2007" (The Pleasures of Energy 2007), a volume created by Enel with the help of the Italian Touring Club as well as a bottle of novello oil. The Taste Simposia – “An oil from Paradise – extra-virgin oils side by side”, at 5:00 pm at the Palazzo del Municipio (Town Hall) will take participants on a guided tour organised by Panel Aprol from Perugia to taste oils made in Italy, Argentina, Chile, Australia, etc…(advance booking required)
At 8:00 pm, meet at the “Bruschetteria del Fachiro laureato” to the music of the “Cantores” from Montefalco
At the same time, connoisseurs must not miss the appointment organised with the Università dei Sapori of Perugia, with the “Galà dell’Olio” – be tempted with the delicacies of the executive chef Massimo Infarinati at the Hotel Park in Montecerreto, which will close the evening of the 24th with a real gastronomic event where Giano oil will be the undisputed protagonist of the palate (cost 35 € per person – book by 22.11.2007)
On Sunday 25 November, between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, there is the visit to “La Fiera dell’olio nuovo” with the producers' show in Piazza del Municipio while, at 10:30 am, at the Palazzo del Municipio, I Simposi del Gusto, offers guided tastings, with the help of Arusia and Città del Bio, as well as “San Felice”, “Dolce Agogia”, “Frantoio”, “Moraiolo” Umbria producers along with organic products taken from the local farming community traditions. (Advance booking required).
Starting at 2:30 pm, there will also be the traditional “Rievocazione della festa della Frasca”, linked to the successful conclusion of olive picking and processing, with a procession of floats, traditional dress and the folk group “Agilla e Trasimeno”.
At 8:00 pm, at the close of the event, everyone is invited to meet at the Bruschetteria dell’ex Molino Sacchi to taste wonderful products and attend the presentation of the book “Dell’arte di cavar l’olio in Umbria. Tradizione e innovazione” by Giulio Scatolini.
This sixth edition of Le Vie dell'olio also offers the following exhibitions: "Mondi sconosciuti, mondi di sconosciuti, mondi disconosciuti"at the Madonna delle Grazie church , organised by the Cooperative Il Cerchio and Centro Handicap "L'isola che c'è" and an Exhibition of objects made by local school-children set up in the Parish hall.

On 25 November, in the Sant’Apollinare di Spina hamlet at the Bambini press, it will be possible to taste the new oil and the traditional Umbria bread, to the sound of folk music and songs.

In Massa Martana, the event will start with an itinerary through the local presses and delicious tastings of typical local specialties. Also at 7:00 pm, the town tables will be set with samples of locally grown and pressed novello oil, with bread cooked in wood-fired ovens and other typical local products.

In the historic centre of Stroncone, the exibitions open at 10:00 am, which is also when tastings of traditional breads flavoured with oil and traditional cuisine products such as lentils, broad beans, olives, spaghetti, pizza, pizzolas, fenil and fritters will take place. Visitors are invited to leave offerings that will be donated to a solidarity project. At 10:00 at the sala polivalente of the Museum Circuit, there will be a talk on the history of olives, oil and the Stroncone presses.

In Forgiano, Signoria, it will be possible to taste Pdo extra-virgin olive oil from Umbria and the Colli Martani, Forgiano salty bread and various pulses and bruschettas all through the day, on Sunday 25th. On this occasion, It will also be possible to visit the “Montagnola” press and the oil and olive museum.

Magione inaugurates its participation on Saturday 24 November at 9:30 am, with a conference that will be held at the Mengoni town theatre, entitled “L’olivicultura del Trasimeno: stato attuale e prospettive”; from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, whereas, at the Town Library, Silvana Campi Germini will organise a Laboratory for children.
Also in the streets of the historical centre, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, a genuine itinerary through oil and typical local produce will be organised with the participation of the Mario Mirabassi Tieffeu; at 8:30 pm, to close the evening, in the magnificent Castle of the Knights of Malta, the menu includes a "Convivio Medioevale", a typical medieval dinner to medieval music.
The programme stretches out to cover Sunday 25 November: from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, it will be possible to browse through the "Mostra Mercato dell’antiquariato del collezionismo e dell’artigianato" set up in the historical centre; from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, nature lovers will be able to go on a horse-back tour that starts at Centro di Magione, stops off at the Torre dei Lombardi with a visit to the typical local produce exhibition and lunch; stops at the Nofrini farm and the Mulino Brunelli with a tasting at the Pucciarella farm.
At 11:15 am, in the San Giovanni Battista church there will be a Holy Mass in honour of Saint Clement with the new oil being blessed. At 4:00 pm, at the Sala Parrocchiale, prizes will be awarded for the “Olio, Olivo e... fantasia” competition among the children of the Circolo Didattico di Magione and then at 5:00 pm at the Mengoni Theatre, there will be a performance of “Cinderella” by the Compagnia Teatrombia. And of course in the historical centre, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, there will be stands offering samples of wine, oil and typical products, to the music of “Bandaccia” and the “Doremilla” musical activities centre will also be open to visitors.
