At Montefalco there is now a stock exchange for grapes. The idea is to match the supply and demand for grapes used to produce the Montefalco Sagrantino Docg and the Montefalco Rosso Doc. This major initiative taken by the Consortium for the protection of Montefalco Wines makes it easier for farmers to sell their grapes and ensures quality for the purchaser, as well as supply in real time.
< – says the Chairman, Lodovico Mattoni –, at any point in time we now know how many grapes are available across the Sagrantino and Rosso di Montefalco area. A database makes it easier to find a purchaser or a batch of grapes. As pointed out by the Chairman of the Consortium for the Protection of Montefalco Wines, this is a virtuous mechanism that secures a high level of quality, and it secures higher income for vine growers: the batches of best grapes will be sold immediately and at a higher price >>.
For each batch that is sold or purchased, a memo is sent out indicating amount and price. In this way the database is constantly updated.
The Price Committee set up at the Consortium, which gathers the representatives of professional farm organizations, the Chamber of Commerce of Perugia and the Montefalco vine growers, has published the 2007 prices for grapes : for the Sagrantino Docg the prices range from a minimum of 100 euros per quintal to a maximum of 150 euros/quintal; and for the Montefalco Rosso the prices range between 70 and 100 euros per quintal.
